From the perspective of Luke Moore

Day 1: Arrival

13:00 Arrived at the main gate.

  • Greeted other early comers and killed some time before the gate opened.

14:00 Gates opened.

  • We drove for 10 kilometers till we reached the camp grounds.
  • Unpacked our vehicles and awaited instructions on the parade ground.

14:30 Fell in.

  • Welcomed by RSM.
(Long pause) BEWEEG!”

14:40 Started pitching tents for accommodations and lectures.

  • We had plenty of time to get acquainted and bond while holding down tent posts and hammering in pegs with scrap pieces of metal.

16:30 Placement run.

  • I came 4th
  • Once I had finished the run I stood at rest on the parade ground and watched as students crossed the finish line and got placed sequentially into one of five teams.

17:00 Paperwork.

  • We handed in our indemnity forms, firearms and electronics.
  • Philip got his finger stuck in a gun slide.

18:00 Skoonmaak.

  • My team (Span 4) was tasked with helping prepare the bungalow and cleaning fire extinguishers.
  • I was made to do 20 pushups for leaving my water bottle on the floor while transporting a fire extinguisher.

19:00 Rules and regulations.

20:00 Downtime.

  • Team 4 was lucky enough to get the bungalow along with Team 5 while Teams 1,2 and 3 were “condemned” to the tents we had pitched earlier that day.
  • The bungalow was long enough to fit 10 sets of bunk beds inside it lengthwise and had a thatched roof. The only entrance was in the dead center of the stone building but had windows across the opposite wall.
  • I chose a bottom bunk to the far right of the entrance, one bunk away from the wall.

22:00 Dinner (Braai pakkies of steak, chop and wors)

  • First time eating out of a dixie.
  • Afterwards we washed our dishes in a basin on the far side of the parade ground.

22:45 Night time Routine.

  • Brushed my teeth, rode go-kart, prepared the following day’s browns, filled water bottle.
  • I know I showered at some point on this day but I don’t remember when.

23:00 Bed time.

  • Nick invited me to walk up the road with him for signal. On the way back to camp I saw a strange figure run into the bushes. It was the size of a baboon but with an abnormally small torso and no tail. It walked on all fours and moved quickly when it noticed us. Could have been an EFF recon scout.

12:00 Siesta.

  • We got undressed, hung up our clothes to dry and went skinny-dipping (Not my idea)
  • I did some butt-boarding while the boys cooled off.
  • When I got out of the water I put on my now-dry underwear, positioned my bag as a pillow, laid down to tan and briefly fell asleep.

  • Passed the caravan park (Our target).

12:30 Established our TB.

12:50 Established another TB.

13:10 Established our final TB.

  • It was little more than a few groundsheets thrown over a few shoulder-high trees but we made it work.
  • Gustav and Morne manned one Observation Post (OP) and Stefan and Dreyer took another one.

13:55 Concerned for our water supplies, we missioned to get water from the Orange River (Which we probably weren’t supposed to do).

  • We stealthily hiked down the mountain side, secured 12 litres of relatively drinkable river water and went on our way.
  • We only took one bag so I volunteered to carry the 12 litres myself. Good workout.

14:40 We arrived back at the TB to some grateful teammates. (Not grateful enough if you ask me)

15:00 Shift change.

  • Those of us who stayed at the TB got to relax.
  • Whoever was manning the OP had to take down notes on what they heard and saw happening around the caravan park.

17:00 Shift change.

  • Tyson and I were on OP.
  • We heard noises but the target area appeared abandoned.
  • We saw bok and warthogs.

19:00 Shift change – Stefan and Dreyer took over the OP.

  • Tyson and I returned to the TB.

20:00 Darkness had fallen over our TB.

  • The full Moon was the only source of light.
  • With most of the big rocks moved out from underneath me I went to sleep.
  • As the night went on the wind grew stronger and the temperature dropped.
  • I woke up periodically trying to get warmer each time.
  • Our sleep was regularly interrupted by the howling wind and our need to cover more of ourselves.

Day 9: Back to the River

03:00 Shift Change – Tyson and I were on duty again.

  • That full Moon was the brightest I had ever seen.
  • It made traversing the rocky Karoo Mountain top much easier.
  • We sat down and, having noticed that the target area had long been abandoned, decided to spend our time chatting about life until sunlight peaked over the mountain on our right.

05:10 Final shift.

  • Back at the TB we packed up so that we could start moving back to camp at 07:00.
  • I had my breakfast rations and did some more sowing.
  • The sowing was interrupted by some unusual stomach rumblings.
  • I think there was something in the river water.

05:30 Upset stomach in the bush.

05:36 I joined the team to resume sowing while they boiled water and spoke about stuff.

06:20 More upset stomach.

07:00 Operation Windhond had concluded – we were now free to return to camp.

08:00 We arrived at HQ second and got to relax while other teams made their way back.

08:30 Debriefing.

  • All teams had been detected by the instructors at some point except for Team 3.
  • Thankfully they didn’t seem to know about our mission for river water.

08:45 Team 4 was tasked with cleaning up around the camp (We were korveespan again).

  • Set up ground sheets for shade.
  • Made fishing lines.
  • Dug up Witgat roots for coffee (That we never got).
  • I pigged out on the cool drink powder, giving me a headache.
  • Helped the instructors take down their tents.
  • Scorpion hunting (With disappointing results).

18:00 We set up a fire place to make our dinner.

  • Stefan caught us 4 fish (And a few for other teams)
  • Skinned the fish.
  • The instructors called a team leaders meeting (For which I represented Team 4)

19:30 Dinner (Fish, bully beef, noodles, stew)

  • Muscles for dessert.

20:30 Night time routine.

20:50 Bed time.

  • Our “beds” were set up along the stony grass no more than 3 meters from the river’s edge.
  • The water roaring past us quickly became white noise that helped soothe us to sleep.
  • The bugs became less aggressive as we settled in for the night.
  • I woke up periodically to get warmer and adjust the rocks underneath me.
  • There came a point when the Moon was so bright that its light shining into my closed eyes was enough to wake me up.

Day 10: Vasbyt

06:00 Woke up.

  • Breakfast (Rations).

06:30 We found out we weren’t allowed to return to camp yet.

06:45 We took a group bath in our man-made dam (Everyone borrowed my soap).

07:05 We packed up most of the camp and relaxed until it was time to move out.

  • “I hope I still have a girlfriend when I get home.”
  • “I hope I have a girlfriend when I get home. I don’t have one now but a guy can hope.”
  • I took one final dip in the Orange River and we finished packing up the camp.

09:35 We said goodbye to the river and hiked back to HQ.

10:00 Arrived at HQ.

  • Toilet/shave/shampoo.
  • Packing/washing clothes.

11:30 Written exam.

  • We’re told that our bags must weigh at least 20 kilograms for vasbyt.

12:15 Bag packing and weighing.

  • Mine weighed 17kg fully packed.
  • 3 bricks later I made par.
  • Ate my extra rat pack.

13:00 Downtime.

14:00 The whole bungalow took a nap.

15:45 Samajoor told us to prepare a braai for ourselves.

16:15 We relaxed while the fire burned.

17:00 Dinner (Braai steak, chop and wors)

17:30 Seconds (Pap, beans and rice).

18:00 Fell in and waited for the greenlight to begin the Vasbyt.

  • We drank as much water as we could and took our final trips to the bathroom.
  • Our bags were now required to weigh 25kgs.
  • I added one more brick.
  • If our bags were under 25kgs when we returned we would incur a penalty.

19:00 Vasbyt officially began.

  • Team 4 departed 4th (Out of 5 teams).
  • The first checkpoint was at Slypsteen Farm’s main gate (Approx. 10 kilometers away).
  • The initial uphill was the worst climb of the whole hike.
  • It didn’t take long for morale to take a nosedive.
  • We made it to the top of the hill as the sun was setting.
  • After darkness fell we were conflicted about using flash lights.
  • After the first hour I could feel 2 large blisters on my feet.

20:50 We hit the first checkpoint in time for our planned, 30 minute-long break.

  • The instructors were there to greet and entertain us.
  • I was having serious concerns about our water supplies.
  • Some people’s bricks were distributed among the more capable teammates to help ease their workloads, accounting for injuries etc.
  • Tyson took painkillers for his leg injuries.
  • Dirk gave out sweets.

21:15 We hit the road again following the instructor’s directions along the perimeter fence.

  • Very soon after departing, Tyson’s painkillers kicked in, propelling him far ahead of the rest of us.
  • Stefan, Pieter and I killed time (While hiking) by talking at the back of the pack.
  • After we turned right at the corner of the fence the pain from my blisters became harder to ignore.
  • It felt as though new blisters were constantly popping up on my feet but there were really only about 8.
  • The trail we were walking seemed to never end.

23:15 We reached the second and final checkpoint.

  • Tyson had arrived there 15 minutes ahead of us.
  • We were given water off the back of the instructor’s truck.
  • Lieutenant Steyn asked everyone if they wanted to give up and offered them a ride back to HQ in his bakkie. An offer no one took him up on. It was probably a trick.
  • Team 3 arrived second at this checkpoint, shortly after us.

23:45 Having rested for half an hour we set out on the final leg of the Vasbyt.

  • At this point we had passed all other teams after having left in 4th place (Not that it was a race)
  • My feet were coping for the first few minutes.
  • I had taken a full pack of gum from Dirk and was constantly chewing it to take my mind off the pain, sometimes two sticks at a time.
  • We turned right at the airfield and finally entered familiar territory.
  • The airfield was much longer than I remembered.
  • We soon reached the turning point for the 2.4 Test where we gave the injured their bricks back when my hind neck muscles gave me a sharp, stinging pain.

Day 11: Recovery

01:45 We arrived back at HQ in first place (again, not that it was a race) with a time of 6 hours and 42 minutes.

01:55 We weighed our bags again and thankfully all avoided the penalty.

  • I packed my bag slightly neater and prepared my bed.
  • We went to the dam to wash off the sweat but the cold night air made it so that I couldn’t stay in for more than a few seconds.
  • Rode go-kart.
  • Went to sleep with a truly tired body.

05:30 Woke up (After another bizarre camp-related dream).

  • Feeling as though I had gotten enough sleep I felt I had to ride go-kart again.
  • I soon realized how tired I was and went back to sleep.
  • I drifted in and out of consciousness until I noticed everyone else in the bungalow was awake and chatting.

07:30 Woke up for real and had breakfast (Rat pack).

  • Our morning was spent recovering and preparing for whatever was to come at 12:00.
  • We cleaned up, chatted with the Lieutenant, showered and ate what food we had left.
  • I took muscle relaxants and felt great afterwards.

12:30 We were given more rations and officially told we had more siesta time.

  • We just chilled.

15:00 Fell in and RSM spoke to us.

  • Short drilling session to prepare for the Geloftediens parade.
  • Smoke break during which RSM spoke to us some more.
  • The fit continued drilling while the injured cleaned up the parade ground.

16:30 I got signal for the first time on the camp and messaged my friends and family.

  • Even more chilling.

17:30 Dinner.

  • Instructors pranked us by giving us rations before bringing out meat, vegetable stew and beer.

18:00 I traded my beer for halls and musk sweets.

  • Instructors called us in groups for a roasting session.
  • Night time routine.
  • Polished boots.
  • Exchanged memes with the boys.

21:30 Bed time.

Day 12: Geloftedag

05:00 Woke up.

05:15 Took photos of the camp grounds and relaxed.

07:00 Breakfast wasn’t ready yet so we cleaned up around the camp.

08:00 Breakfast (Pap, mince and beans).

08:20 Toilet/shave/shampoo.

  • I tried to polish my boots but was interrupted.

09:00 We were called for a “Chicken parade.”

  • We waited in formation while friends and family arrived.

10:00 We went on parade and sat down for Geloftediens.

  • I saw my parents for the first time in 11 days.
  • Gustav Müller gave another impassioned speech as I struggled to stay awake.

11:30 Family time.

  • I caught up with my folks.
  • Ate all the snacks they brought me.
  • Dumped my unnecessary cargo off on them.

13:00 Parents checked out the bungalow and met my teammates before leaving for their hotel.

  • I relaxed with my team and drank the mountain dew my parents gave me.

14:00 Braai time w/ pap and beans.

15:00 I sowed buttons onto my shirt for the following day’s dinner.

15:30 Team 4 made a couch out of mattresses.

  • We put it to good use.

15:50 Instructors made everyone go through the showers and get into the dam.

16:00 Because I didn’t go with them the Lieutenant made me wash the instructor’s dishes.

16:35 Downtime.

17:00 Some of us were asked to move the fire extinguishers back into storage.

17:15 We fell in and struck as much of the camp as possible to make the following morning more convenient.

18:00 More downtime.

18:20 Dessert (Vanilla/strawberry ice cream and custard).

19:00 RSM taught us all how to play Kennetjie.

20:00 Toilet/shave/shampoo.

20:15 I broke out the biltong my parents had given me to share with my teammates.

21:00 About a dozen of the students across multiple teams were unhappy with one of the guys for not bathing enough so we banded together to throw him in the dam and toss OMO at him.

21:30 Bed time.

Day 13: Prize giving

05:30 Woke up to the sound of the Lieutenant berating someone in one of the bunks next to mine.

  • Day 3 with blisters (Definite improvement).
  • Morning routine but no shower.

06:00 We began striking the camp.

07:00 Breakfast (Pap, mince and beans).

  • No time to shower so we kept packing equipment onto bakkies.
  • I packed up the medic’s tent with Steve’s help.

08:30 Some members of Team 4 snuck away to relax in the bungalow while the others kept on packing.

09:30 Final call to strike the camp to completion.

  • We packed up the ground sheets, poles, pens and tables.
  • Hurried up and waited.
  • We chugged water straight out the tap and took our final bathroom breaks.

10:00 We said goodbye to the HQ, drove up to the farm’s main gate, took a group photo and rushed off for Vanderkloof in a convoy of cars.

11:00 Bathroom break/bought snacks/stretched legs.

11:35 Arrived in Vanderkloof.

  • Picnicked with the folks.
  • Had my first jaffle.
  • Put on copious amounts of sunscreen.
  • Briefly swam and rowed with Tyson.

12:30 We noticed the boat club was empty of most of the students.

  • We drove out and met up with them at Ribbok for drinks.
  • Dirk was kind enough to buy me a celebratory Jameson whiskey.

13:15 We moved up the road to Oppiedek for more drinks and a nicer view.

  • I ate a slice of chocolate cake and drank Iron Brew.

15:23 Departed for the boat club.

  • We returned and waited for everyone to gather for something happening at 16:00.

16:00 Instructors sorted us into small, medium and large rows.

  • We were given Doring Draad shirts and our hotel room keys.

16:20 Drove to the hotel.

  • Shave/shampoo.
  • I chilled on the grass outside with DJ and Deuwald.
  • Packed my bags in order to leave with my parents after prizegiving.

17:30 Arrived at the NG Kerk well ahead of schedule.

  • Group photos all around.

17:45 Prize giving parade began.

  • Stood at rest while more family and friends arrived.
  • Performed our final parade.
  • Marched into the church to take our seats.

18:20 Sat down for prize giving.

  • Muller gave a brief speech.
  • Colonel Du Toit addressed us.
  • Certificates were handed out to students, instructors and affiliates.
  • Final group photos were taken.
  • I said my final goodbyes “For now.”

20:20 Departed with my parents for our hotel in Orania.

Bestuur.

By plaas kampplekke waar klein hoeveelhede families by plaasopstalle aanbly, moet daar so spoedig as moontlik puttoilette gegrawe word.
